Preview of Microsoft Build 2024, May and June are the busiest months in the technology industry. Early May saw the release of the thinnest iPad, followed by the unveiling of ChatGPT 4.0 at OpenAI’s Spring Update and the Gemini 1.5 updates at the Google I/O 2024 event. Now, it’s time for Microsoft Build 2024, scheduled from May 21 to 24. While this annual developer conference typically focuses on developers, this year, consumers have much to look forward to as well.
Microsoft is set to announce exciting AI features for Windows 11, powerful yet efficient Snapdragon X Elite laptops, and enhancements to various consumer-facing products. From Windows and Copilot to new ARM-powered laptops and on-device AI applications, there’s plenty for users to be excited about.
The central theme of Microsoft Build 2024 is AI, encapsulated by the question, “How will AI shape your future?” For the first time, Microsoft has the ability to deliver features and experiences on thin and lightweight laptops without compromising performance or battery life, thanks to the efficient ARM-based Qualcomm processors. It’s time for Windows on ARM (WoA) to shine.
While Copilot, AI, and Azure programming will feature prominently at the conference, there are likely to be surprises, including potential hardware announcements. Although Build is a developer-centric event, it will also generate interest in Surface tablets, laptops, and the Windows operating system.

Early benchmarks of the Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite suggest these chips could compete with the latest Intel Meteor Lake and Apple M3 chips. With Microsoft’s push to integrate AI across its business, the new laptops at Build 2024 will likely showcase the latest AI features in Windows.
There is also a possibility of getting a glimpse of Windows 12 (or its eventual branding), although reports vary on whether Microsoft plans to release a new version of its flagship OS before 2025.

Since its inception in 2011, Microsoft Build has been a beacon of innovation and collaboration. From Anaheim to Seattle, this annual gathering has evolved into a global platform uniting developers and technologists from around the world.
How It Starts:
The conference is organized in a hybrid format:
- In-person: Microsoft Build will be held at Microsoft’s corporate headquarters in Seattle. Attending in person costs $1,825.
- Online: Participants worldwide can attend the sessions online. Upon registration, you will receive a digital attendee pass and a confirmation email.

Microsoft Build: AI Day 2024 EP:0 Come (A Day Too Early)
You might have heard that Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, is visiting Asia this week, and he will be in Thailand on May 1st. As of writing this blog, that’s tomorrow. I had some free time away from my university classes, so I decided to work on a blog about Global Azure 2024 at a Starbucks in Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. After finishing up, I planned to head home but thought I might catch a preview tour of the Microsoft Build: AI Day Thailand 2024 event. So, I quietly joined the Microsoft staff as they prepped.
My first stop was at the stairway leading to the event’s plenary hall, We had a quick chat before heading up together. He pointed out that I was a day early, and I jokingly replied, “Yeah, I’m just rehearsing to get a front-row seat tomorrow. I want to see Satya Nadella in person once in my life.” He laughed and told me to enjoy the view.
Upstairs, I saw staff rehearsing for tomorrow’s event and got a rough look at the event booths. Although they were still setting up, I managed to snap some photos.
First, I saw the staff badge example banner for early access. As a student ambassador, I’ll be at the MVP booth, though I’m not official staff. I’ll take a picture of my badge tomorrow after registering.
Next, there was the registration booth. Don’t forget to bring the event QR code for staff to scan. Arriving late means longer queues and a back-row seat, so I recommend coming early.
After registration, you enter the event zone with a Microsoft logo photo booth and various company booths. They’ll set up tonight, and I expect some fantastic light-and-sound displays tomorrow. I ran into P’Chang in the preparation zone and we chatted about my early arrival.
Before heading home, I took a picture of the beautiful sunset over Benchakitti Park with Bangkok’s skyline. But then, something surprising happened.
I accidentally met Microsoft Thailand’s Managing Director, K.Toey Dhanawat Suthumpun. He recognized me as a Student Ambassador and we had a brief conversation.
“Hi, looks like you’re a day early. That’s awesome. And you’re a Student Ambassador, right?” he asked.
“Yes, I am. I wanted to make sure I get a front-row seat to see Satya and get an early look at the event setup,” I replied.
“Wow, that’s great! Make sure to get up early tomorrow, and you might get lucky. I hope we meet again tomorrow. Don’t forget to take a photo with me,” he said before heading downstairs.
My heart was racing from the unexpected encounter, but it was time to go home.
On my way down, I realized P’Vin Vasupon was beside me. We took a quick selfie with the MD in the background if I’d be attending all day tomorrow, and I confirmed I would.
Finally, I want to make sure everyone is ready for tomorrow’s event. It’s going to be an incredible experience for developers, with the chance to meet tech celebrities near your home. I hope you enjoyed my story so far. See you in the next episode with event details.
Snapdragon X Elite Laptops Are Coming
Just a day before Build 2024, Microsoft is set to unveil new Surface laptops powered by the Snapdragon X Elite processor on May 20. Rumor has it that Microsoft will announce the Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10, both featuring the Snapdragon X Elite, with no Intel variants for consumers this time around.
Furthermore, leaks suggest that these upcoming Surface laptops will rival Apple’s M3 MacBooks in terms of performance and battery life. If true, this could redefine Windows laptops as a viable alternative to MacBooks for consumers and developers. I’m eagerly looking forward to the event.
Additionally, other laptop makers such as Asus, Dell, Samsung, Lenovo, HP, and Acer are also preparing to launch AI PCs featuring Qualcomm processors around this time.
New Surface PCs and Tablets Unveiled
In March, Microsoft introduced the Surface Pro 10 for Business and Surface Laptop 6 for Business, featuring enhanced AI capabilities tailored for corporate use. There’s speculation that consumer versions of these devices will be announced, equipped with Intel “Meteor Lake” Core Ultra processors, a dedicated Copilot key, and upgraded 1440p cameras. The Ultra processors facilitate on-board AI processing, delivering faster responses compared to relying on Microsoft’s servers.
However, it’s more probable that we’ll witness the debut of entirely new devices powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite. This move could potentially equip Windows devices with the battery life and AI processing power needed to compete with the latest generation of speedy Apple Silicon-based computers. Personally, I appreciated the form factor of the now-discontinued Arm-powered Surface Pro X tablet. Revisiting that lightweight design and extended battery life could significantly boost Microsoft’s tablet aspirations and appeal to laptop users seeking these features. Regardless, we’ll be providing coverage of the Surface event on May 20.
AI Explorer in Windows 11
On May 20, Microsoft is expected to unveil the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 build, which promises to introduce several exciting AI features. Among the most anticipated is AI Explorer, a tool designed to analyze all your interactions on your PC and create a comprehensive memory. This allows you to search for information using natural language prompts, with the AI assistant retrieving relevant details from its indexed memory.
Leaks also suggest that AI Explorer will have the capability to read your screen and assist with various tasks. Recently, OpenAI showcased a demo on macOS with the new ChatGPT desktop app, which can see the screen and provide real-time assistance.
While OpenAI has not released a dedicated ChatGPT app for Windows, it appears that Microsoft is developing an integrated AI experience for Windows 11 using on-device vision models. This new feature could launch on May 21, adding to the excitement.
Furthermore, leaks indicate that AI models will run locally on devices leveraging the Snapdragon X Elite’s powerful NPU, capable of performing 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This enables language and vision models to operate directly on your laptop, providing AI assistance while ensuring that your data remains private and not sent to the cloud.
Copilot Updates at Microsoft Build
Nadella has consistently emphasized that Microsoft is now “the Copilot company.” Even the Build scheduler web page features a Copilot text box inviting users to “Ask me anything about Microsoft Build,” powered by Azure AI.
A total of 137 sessions include the word Copilot in their titles or description text. At Build, we anticipate unveiling new Copilot capabilities integrated into Windows and Office. Additionally, there will be ample information on programming for Copilot, with a focus on enabling a “Low Code” approach for easier functionality building.
Last fall’s Microsoft Ignite showcased several Copilot innovations, including Copilot Studio, Copilot for Service, and Copilot for Sales. As such, we anticipate the introduction of additional Copilot features at this year’s Build event.
